Sclerotherapy Q & A

What is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a short, noninvasive medical procedure that has been used to treat spider and varicose veins since the 1930s.

The procedure involves the injection of a salt solution directly into the impacted vein through a very fine needle. The salt solution causes an irritation of the blood vessel lining, forcing it to collapse and the blood to clot. Once clotted, the blood vessel can no longer pool blood, effectively fading the red or blue vein from view.

A sclerotherapy procedure lasts from 15 to 30 minutes. The treatment has a 75% to 90% success rate and might require multiple treatments.

Is sclerotherapy painful?

Sclerotherapy is not painful and doesn’t require anesthesia, since only a small injection is needed. This means that you might feel the pinch of the needle.

You may also experience a slight discomfort after your doctor administers the solution, and the injected area might cramp up for a couple of minutes. Remember, the salt solution is meant to provoke an irritation, so this is normal.

What are the side effects of sclerotherapy?

Side effects of sclerotherapy include light bruising, redness, and pain in the affected area. You may also notice brown spots around the injected area. These are normal and will disappear over time. They shouldn’t affect your everyday life.

Less common side effects can include:

  • Allergic reaction to the solution
  • Skin discoloration
  • Headaches and nausea

The most serious and dangerous side effect is the formation of a blood clot inside the treated vein. If left untreated, the blood clot can travel to various areas of the body and cause an embolism. You should call GulfCoast Vein and Laser Center or seek urgent care if you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, or dizziness after the procedure.

What happens after sclerotherapy?

The effects of sclerotherapy are almost immediate, though your doctor at GulfCoast Vein and Laser Center might recommend that you wear compression socks within the first 24 hours after the procedure. This will assist the solution in dissolving the impacted vein.

The doctors also recommend that you stay active. The less mobile you are, the higher the chances of a blood clot.

During the first couple of days after the procedure, you should not:

  • Take hot baths
  • Simmer in saunas
  • Use swimming pools
  • Take anti-inflammatory drugs (Tylenol is fine)
  • Expose the affected area to sunlight
  • Travel on airplanes
  • Run or lift weights

Getting rid of spider veins doesn’t have to be complicated. GulfCoast Vein and Laser Center makes sure that sclerotherapy procedures are quick, painless, and effective. Schedule an appointment today to find out if sclerotherapy is right for you.
